Do you know when to replace brake pads and how to install them?
Time: 2025-11-07
Brake pads are generally composed of the floor, the adhesive insulation layer and the friction layer. The insulation layer of brake pads is made up of poor heat conduction materials and reinforcing materials, while the friction layer is composed of reinforcing materials, adhesives and fillers. Generally, hydraulic transmission is adopted. The piston of the brake caliper pushes the brake pads to come into contact with the brake disc or drum, and the friction is converted into heat energy, thereby achieving the effect of deceleration and braking. Brake pads can directly reflect the quality of braking performance, so they are the most crucial and direct components in a car's braking system. How to install and replace brake pads? LONG WIND manufacturer will tell you.
The timing for replacing brake pads
The best time to replace brake pads: For disc brakes, the thickness of the brake pads can be checked by stepping on the brake plate, while for drum brakes, the thickness of the brake pads on the brake shoes needs to be pulled out of the brake. However, whether it is the brake pads on disc brakes or drum brakes, the manufacturer stipulates that their thickness must not be less than 1.2mm, because all actual measurements show that before or after 1.2mm, the brake pads wear out and peel off more quickly. Therefore, car owners should check and replace the brake pads on the brakes at this time or before. Generally, for vehicles under normal driving conditions, the service life of the brake pads on the front brake is 30,000 to 50,000 kilometers, and that on the rear brake is 120,000 to 150,000 kilometers.
The method for replacing brake pads
First, check whether the brake pads to be replaced are genuine accessories (i.e., matching products), the integrity of the product packaging, the anti-counterfeiting marks and packaging labels are consistent with the labels on the brake pads, and whether the product model is consistent with the content of the certificate of conformity. Before lifting the vehicle, the cover containing the brake fluid should be opened first, and the tire screws should be loosened diagonally. When using a simple jack for support, the jack should be properly set up and the wheels without brake pads replaced should be reinforced. Remove the tire, loosen the fastening screws of the clamp body, and check the screws and the sliding guide rod of the clamp. Clean the sand and oil stains on them and apply lubricating oil for maintenance. Remove the old brake pads and check the degree of wear on the brake discs to see if there are grooves or dents. Severe wear (3mm deep on one side) should be replaced with new brake discs. The cycle is 80,000 to 120,000 kilometers. Otherwise, it will accelerate the wear of the newly replaced brake pads, and during braking, the direction will shake and the braking force will be too small.
It is worth noting that when installing new brake pads, it is necessary to distinguish between the inside and outside. The friction surface of the brake pads should face the brake disc to ensure a proper fit between the disc and the pads. Install the accessories properly and tighten the clamp body. Before tightening the clamp body, use a tool (or a special tool) to push the plug on the clamp back into position to facilitate the proper installation of the clamp. If it is necessary to replace the brake pads on the drum brake, it is recommended to go to a professional repair shop and have professionals operate it to avoid mistakes.
After the brake is installed, the tires should be reset. When installing tire screws, they should be tightened diagonally. This is beneficial for protecting the tires and brake rims. At the same time, it is necessary to check whether the wear on the tread and edges is normal. It is best to replace and use the left and right wheels regularly, which will be conducive to extending the service life of the tires. Finally, the brake fluid also needs to be checked. Brake fluid should be replaced and replenished regularly. At the same time, it is necessary to ensure that the brand of brake fluid used is consistent with the original one. This will help remove sludge and dirt from the brake lines and make braking more sensitive. If brake fluids of different brands are mixed and used, chemical changes will occur, generating sludge and inorganic salts that deposit in the braking system. Over time, this can clog the pipelines and cause braking failure, with unimaginable consequences.
